The Code and Coquille Bonheur
In the wake of the 1996 World Congress on the Sexual Exploitation of Children, ECPAT Sweden, in collaboration with the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and Swedish tour operators, initiated "The Code," a global initiative aimed at combating child exploitation within the travel and tourism sector. This movement has since received strong backing from various international organizations, including the ECPAT network, the WTO, and UNICEF.
Coquille Bonheur joined "The Code" in 2016, demonstrating a firm commitment to protecting children from exploitation in tourism. While Mauritius is famed for its beauty, it is not exempt from the global issue of child exploitation in tourism. Recognizing this, Coquille Bonheur actively works to uphold the principles set forth by "The Code," focusing on specific measures designed to protect children and encourage ethical practices across the industry.
Partnering with the “Friends in Tourism” Association, Coquille Bonheur takes a proactive stance against the sexual exploitation of children. This commitment includes establishing and enforcing clear policies and procedures against child exploitation, ensuring that both staff and clients are well-informed and vigilant. Our employees are thoroughly trained in children’s rights, how to prevent exploitation, and the appropriate steps to take if they encounter suspicious behavior. We enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy on child exploitation, which is reflected in our contracts with suppliers and partners. We also educate travelers about children’s rights, providing them with resources to help prevent exploitation and report any concerns they might have.
Our mission extends beyond just raising awareness; we aim to empower tour operators, tourists, and local communities with the tools and knowledge they need to protect children. Everyone has a responsibility to ensure the safety of children. If you suspect any form of child exploitation, it is vital to report it immediately. Coquille Bonheur is dedicated to creating a safe environment for children, engaging all stakeholders in the tourism industry in this critical effort.
As part of our ongoing commitment, we are launching a social media campaign to highlight the dangers of child exploitation in tourism. This initiative is designed to educate and inspire everyone involved in the travel industry—be it travelers, agencies, or professionals—to join the fight against child exploitation.
